Socrates Sculpture Park: What to See in Queens
Socrates Sculpture Park: What to See in Queens
Guía rápida
Socrates Sculpture Park is one of the parks in New York you can enjoy completely free.
If you already know Manhattan and you're exploring other New York neighborhoods, this sculpture park is a really interesting spot in Queens, close to other attractions I'll tell you about in a minute.

It's a public park dedicated to displaying large-scale sculptures and installations, located in Long Island City, on the East River waterfront across from Roosevelt Island.
Socrates Sculpture Park is very close to the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum, so it's a good idea to visit both on the same day.
Events at Socrates Sculpture Park
There's always something going on at this park, especially because locals use it constantly, so on top of the sculpture exhibits there are always workshops and other activities. If you want the full calendar, check the park's official website.
There are some recurring events too. Between December and February, for example, Socrates Sculpture Park sets up a light installation that illuminates the river off Queens every evening at dusk.
Another summer tradition is the free outdoor movie screenings at sunset, evenings with plenty of live music and food stands to round out the atmosphere.
The history of Socrates Sculpture Park
In 1986, a coalition of artists led by Mark di Suvero turned a former illegal dump into this open-air art space.
That single act made it an important symbol of reclaiming urban space for residents to enjoy.
Another example of reclaimed and transformed urban space in New York is the High Line Park, built on an abandoned rail line, or the much newer Little Island, built on pilings in the Hudson River.
If you've read this far, it's because you love discovering New York's wonderful parks. And since you're already over in Queens, another place you can't miss is Gantry Plaza State Park. The views of Manhattan are something else! I recommend going at sunset 😉
